Sally Holmes Rose
Breeder & Launch: Robert A. Holmes (UK), introduced in 1976. The variety was named in honor of the breeder’s wife.
Alternative Chinese Names: “Shali Fumo Si”, “Shali Fuermosi”, “Sali Fuermosi”
Category: Hybrid Musk Rose; can be cultivated as either a shrub or a climber.
Parentage: Cross between Rosa ‘Ivory Fashion’ and Rosa ‘Ballerina’.
Plant Characteristics: Mature height ranges from 150 – 365 cm, with a spread of 120 – 182 cm. It has good branching, glossy dark green foliage, and is nearly thornless, making it easy to train when grown as a climber.
Flower Traits: Flower diameter is 8 – 12 cm, with a single – petal form (4 – 8 petals). Buds are pale peachy – pink, and the blooms initially appear creamy white with a hint of pink, adorned with prominent long golden stamens. As the stamens turn brown gradually, the flowers fade to a brilliant white. Blooms grow in large clusters of 10 – 40 flowers, and they open sequentially in the inflorescence, resulting in an extended flowering period from late spring to autumn. The flowers are highly resistant to deterioration in prolonged hot weather and rain.
Fragrance: Light and delicate musky – floral scent.
Disease Resistance: Excellent overall disease resistance, though it is occasionally susceptible to black spot.
Awards: Has won multiple international awards, including the Monza Gold Medal (1979), Baden – Baden Gold Medal (1980), Portland Gold Medal (1993), and was inducted into the Rose Hall of Fame as the “World’s Favourite Rose” in 2012.
