Royal Mondain Rose (Common Names: Zipaoyudai, Silver Thread Embroidered Red Robe)
Category: A classic climbing and shrub dual – purpose rose variety of hybrid evergreen rose. It was bred by Reverchon from France and released in 1897. It also has multiple commercial aliases such as Baron Giraud de l’Ain, Prinzess Christine von Salm and Nase Národni.
Plant Characteristics: It can be cultivated as either a climbing rose or a shrub. When grown as a shrub, it stands upright, with a plant height of 180 – 350 cm and a width of 90 – 120 cm. However, its branches tend to droop, which may make the plant shape scattered. The stems are covered with many thorns. It has an extremely fast growth rate, with an annual growth of 2 – 3 meters. It can grow from a seedling to a large plant of 3 – 4 meters in only two years. It has strong disease resistance, being less likely to be affected by common rose diseases such as black spot and powdery mildew, and is easy to cultivate, which is very friendly to gardening beginners.
Flower Traits: The flower diameter ranges from 8 to 12 cm. The petals are mainly deep carmine red and purple, with very thin white edges that show a silvery luster in the sun, and the white color in the flower center is particularly prominent when blooming. When exposed to sunlight for a long time, the flower color will fade slightly and present a lavender hue. This unique color matching makes the variety highly recognizable among numerous rose varieties.
Fragrance: It has a variable and rich rose fragrance, which is pleasant and can spread with the breeze, adding a charming scent to the planting environment.
Growth and Cultivation Adaptability: It prefers cool areas in the garden and can tolerate shady environments. When planted as a climbing rose, it blooms profusely in spring and sparsely in other seasons. It is adaptable to the environment, with good heat and cold resistance, and is suitable for planting in most areas of China. It favors loose, fertile and well – drained slightly acidic soil. It is often used for vertical greening such as building flower walls, arches and fences in gardens, and can also be planted alone in flower beds. However, due to its vigorous growth, it is easy to grow into an overgrown plant if not pruned in time, requiring regular pruning and fertilization to maintain its good shape and flowering state.
